Because her daughter couldn’t have children, a 61-year-old stepped in as a surrogate mother. Now the woman was carrying her first grandchild.
A 61-year-old American woman has stepped in as a surrogate mother for her daughter. She has now given birth to her own grandson in Chicago (Illinois).
“The three happiest moments of my life were the births of my three daughters. I wanted to experience that again and at the same time do something extraordinary for a loved one,” Kristine Casey told the Chicago Tribune newspaper .
Her daughter, Sara Connell, had been trying to get pregnant for years. Finally the mother offered to help. Little Finnean was born by caesarean section and everyone would have cried in the operating room. “The procedure itself was uncomplicated, but the emotions associated with it are enormous,” said doctor Susan Gerber to the newspaper.
Before her daughter’s artificially fertilized egg was delivered, the 61-year-old had to undergo numerous medical tests and hormone treatments. “The risks of pregnancy at this age are significantly higher. It is important that patients are well informed about these dangers,” said David Cohen, head of the department of reproductive medicine at the University Hospital in Chicago. But the American woman is still comparative young.
In 2008, a supposedly 70-year-old woman in India gave birth to twins. After returning to her home in the US state of Virginia, Kristine Casey is “enthusiastic” about taking on the role of grandmother – Finnean is her first grandchild.
